This coconut grater is from the Swahili, Bagamoyo,Tanzania. This
interlocking stool is carved from a single piece of wood and the surface
is covered with various geometric designs. The pulp from the inside of
the coconut was scraped on the protruding metal blade. Since the
nineteenth century, the Swahili have been producing coconut graters that
resemble Koran stands. This one measures 24” long by 8” high and has a
misattribution on the back label as being Hawaiian. Ex Elliot coll.
