Douge necklace
Dogon people, Mali, West Africa
Iron, stone
18" (45.7 cm) long
Mid 20th century
A nice example of a douge (sacred stone) necklace worn by the Hogon (spiritual elders). It has a smooth ellipital river stone and another liver colored stone, similar to healing stones I've seen in the Sinai. There is a small slave manacle, seen in the center of the above photo, which might represent the capture of evil spirits.
