This wildly graphic skirt length is unusual, as most often the traditional traje (costume) has a band or two of cadinella design running the length of the skirt. The patterns on this skirt are painstakingly chain stitched by hand; most later skirts from the 70s and 80s have sewing machine applied embroidery. This was the type of skirt typically worn by Frida Kahlo, as can be seen below in a photo from an exhibit at the Frida Kahlo Museum. The waistband and lace flounce have been removed, and the condition of the fabric is very good.
