Japan
Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica, in Japanese sugi), glass, paint
3.5 high by 7 inches long (9 by 18 cm)
20th century
In Japan, toads are associated with good luck, hospitality and fortuitous travel. This is a nice one, with all of it bumps intact and with one particularly dark bump on its lower back that may have been touched repeatedly over the years. Its feet rise up a little off the ground due to its fat belly. Unsigned and without the typical incised Made in Japan.
