Hanuman figure
South India
Lost wax cast bronze, pink puja powder
3 inches (7.6 cm) high; 1-1.8 inch (2.8 cm) wide
18th century

Hanuman, known also as Anjaneya, is one of the most important personalities in the epic Ramayana. He accompanied his master, Lord Rama, an avatar of Vishnu, in the war against Ravana, the demon king of Lanka (Ceylon).

He is depicted here standing with hands in anjali mudra, the gesture of total devotion, which Hanuman personifies. His tail arches around the back of his head and his face shows considerable softness from centuries of ritual puja.
