Meiji Period, late 19th to early 20th century

This small mechanical toy was made in Kobe, Japan. This is the classic doll of a man chopping and eating a slice of watermelon, with the action controlled by a turning knob on the left side. When at rest, his head hangs down, with mouth closed and left arm on the table. His left eyeball is missing the bead, which adds to his slightly crazed demeanor.
