Khadau chappals or paduka
India
Wood
9.25" (23.5 cm) long
Late 19th to early 20th century

A nicely carved pair of Indian paduka sandals with a graphic leaf-like pattern. Because leather was prohibited in earlier times, wood was used due to its insulating properties, as it was believed that one's energy would be prevented from being grounded by the earth.
