Asian Tribal Art - Arrow chest, Japan


This is an imperial arrow procession chest from Japan. It stands 37” high and the lid measures 13” square. These were used to carry arrows and paraphernalia in a royal procession suspended by a stick that would go through the chest – see photos of the sides below. The gold crest is that of the paulownia tree, an emblem of the Japanese throne. Inside, there is an old leather carrying case and a leather archery glove - please see photos below.
