Asian Tribal Art - Bone ornament, Tibet


This beautifully carved human bone ornament is from Tibet. As a segment of a large bone apron that was worn by tantric necromancers to drive away evil spirits at important ceremonies, its symbolic purpose was as a reminder of the transience of life. See an example of a complete apron from the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco below. 

Measuring 4.5” high by 1.25” wide, the wax export seal can be seen on the back. 19th century.  #8069  SOLD
