Ganesha
India
Lost wax cast bronze
2" (5 cm) high
15th century
#3532

Remover of obstacles, patron of letters and learning, Ganesha is the scribe who used his broken tusk to write down parts of the Mahabarata. The rat is his celestial vahana or vehicle. He is invoked before all religious ceremonies and before any new undertaking. His worship has a place in marriage ceremonies and in Tantrism. This is a village casting of ganesh, which are more casually modelled but still with a certain charm.
