A large beautiful lithograph from M.C. Escher, appropriately titled The Encounter, as two figures painted on a wall approach the horizontal plane and gain substance, becoming ever more three-dimensional as they encircle an abyss, eventually meeting to shake hands.
Signed in pencil lower left M.C. Escher No. 2/30 II. Also signed in the image lower right is the date May 1944 and Escher’s monogram: V-’44 MCE. Printed on thick wove paper with two watermarks: in the upper right corner is the curvilinear logo of the Van Gelder Zonen paper mill (1845-1982) and in the lower right corner running vertically is the word “Holland” in script. In pencil, lower right margin is written Litho ontmoeting 53g (encounter).
Please see detail photos. Linen mat with wood frame, will not be shipped with glass. There is some mat burn and the print is mounted on cloth hinges.
