Batik selendang (shawl or scarf)
Java
Cotton
20" (51 cm) wide by 76" (192.6 cm) long
Pre-1960

This handsome selendang is a blend of tulis foreground drawing and tchap stamped backgrounds. It is called tiga negeri (3 states) because each color is dyed in the place best known for that color: Solo, Lasem, and Pekalongan. This was the most expensive type of batik for its time, given the transportation costs in making the piece.

There is no damage, but for one small white dye skip that you can see in det3 in the second cartouche from the bottom. The long edges are very finely machine stitched and the short edges are selvage.
