Indonesian Tribal Art - Jacket, Kauer people, Sumatra

An exceptional woman’s jacket from the Kauer people of South Sumatra. Jackets like this were worn only by young unmarried women at special ceremonial occasions. On the bodice are two panels with mirrors called cermuk, which are small pieces of either lead or glass attached to the surface of the cloth by embroidery.  Above those panels are nassa shells sewn onto hand loomed indigo fabric on the front and back. Please see multiple views below. It measures 53.5” from one sleeve tip to the other and 10” high. Early 20th century.  #1638  $1500
