This baba (or bapa) helmet mask is from the Southern
Abelam/Wosera people of Papua New Guinea. These masks represented
frightening female spirits and were used to chase non-initiates, women
and children during the preparation of male initiation rituals. Tightly
woven, this one measures 17" high and is a startling sight from every
angle. Early 20th century. #2340
