African Tribal Art - Drinking horn, Kuba, Zaire

This is a glorious drinking horn from the Kuba of Zaire. Made from the buffalo horn, it was used by warriors to drink palm wine. It is decorated with various designs carved in relief, including concentric circles, a zigzag band near the tip and a band of cross-hatch near the mouth, with a patina that is encrusted and shiny, indicating years of use. The softly fluted area near the suspension hole is a particularly masterful touch. Please see detail photos below. It measures 17” long and is 7’ wide at the mouth. Late 19th to early 20th century. #9122  SOLD
