Another tanga from the
Marajoara culture, Marajo Island, Para, Brazil. It is a thin triangular
concave ceramic pubic cover found in burial mounds associated with
females. This one has a cream slip decorated overall with intricate
orange-brown painted geometric designs. The holes at the corners are
believed to be string holes, meant to attach the artifact to the
female’s body. It measures 7-3/4” wide by 5-1/4” high. Repaired
from four original fragments with restoration over the breaks. Ex
Jean-Eugene Lyons collection, Geneve, Switzerland. Ca. 400-1300 A.D.
