Low lacquer table
Japan
Wood, lacquer
28.5 inches long by 11.5 wide by 3 high (72.3 by 29.2 by 7.6 cm)
Mid-20th century
The surface of this low table has been polished down so the gorgeous grain of the wood shows through, then the surface has been varnished. This is a treatment that has been occurring as the lacquer worker's tools, bowls and work surfaces have gained popularity. See the book Layers of Brilliance by Kendall H. Brown for more examples. This table is one inch thick and sits three inches off the ground.
