In this unusual batik from China, the imagery relates to the “master of
the animals” motif, probably inspired by Chinese minority culture.
In some
traditions, the master of the animals is believed to be the ruler of the
forest and guardian of all animals, with the animals depicted in any
example particular to the culture of origin.
This supernatural master is flanked by a serpent and eagle or phoenix
form, with many smaller animals contained in each figure. The graphic
qualities are dramatic and modern, producing an exciting fusion of the
old and the new. This scroll measures 78” long and 31” wide. The brocade
that surrounds the batik above and below on the scroll can be seen in
the photo below, which hangs from a cord and is anchored by a wooden
