Asian Tribal Art - Mask, Monpa-Sherdukpen, Bhutan

This sublime mask is from the Monpa-Sherdukpen tribes of East Bhutan or adjacent regions of northeast India. It has a shiny black patina with reddish pigment in the incised facial lines, measures 8” high by 7” wide, and has a pair of holes in each ear, at the top of the head and under the chin. There is a stable crack that runs from the left corner of the mouth to the bottom edge. It hails from the same stylistic family as three masks illustrated in Thomas Murray’s article Demons and Deities, Masks of the Himalayas (Nos. 30, 33 and 34). Ex Mort Golub Collection, 19th century.  #2056  $7200
