This menacing leather mempo was part of a Japanese Samurai Kabuto
helmet. The black lacquered leather has a wonderful patina and sports
one small chip on the upper right corner of the mouth. The small spout
under the chin would allow the sweat on the face to spill out while it
was being worn. These masks were used to protect the face as well as to
intimidate the enemy. It measures 6” high by 8” wide and has a custom
base. Edo Period, 18th to 19th century, pre-1850. #8062
