Ceremonial huipil (blouse)
Patzicia village, Guatemala
Cotton, silk
1970s or 80s
46" (117 cm) high by 20" (50.8 cm) wide
Ex. private San Francisco collection

The handspun cotton threads used for the body of this large huipil make for an incredibly soft fabric. There are natural brown warp threads called ixcaco woven next to blue threads in the stripes; the supplementary brocade and seams are woven with silk. It's in excellent condition with a little soil on the front. The color is a true cherry red and does not lean toward orange as it does in the photographs. Ceremonial huipiles from this village are rare.
