These two sculptural conus shell bracelets are from Sarawak, North
Borneo. Originally, there was tree resin and cowrie shells in the pocket
formed by the overlapping shell – this was so damaged it was removed
long ago. The tribal people of the Indonesian Archipelago believed that
any closed circle provided a protective barrier against hostile forces,
making these bracelets much more than mere adornment. The larger has an
inside circumference of 9.5” and the smaller 9.25”. Early 20th century.
