Bark painting of Namarrkon
Northern Territory, Australia
Wood, ochre, pigment
Mid 20th century
22 by 13 inches (56 by 33 cm)
A bark painting of Namarrkon, the lightning spirit. Wearing axes in his belt, he holds another in his hand, which he uses to make thunder and lightning, as can be seen arcing from the top of his head. The bulging eyes and triangular face give it an unusual, almost frog-like appearance. This is painted in a the traditional style and with the use of cross-hatching or rarrk. Although it is not signed, it was purchased with a group of Bobby Ngainjmirra bark paintings in Queensland, Australia, in the 1970s. A collection number can be seen in the upper left corner verso.
