Yam mask
Abelam people, Papua New Guinea
Fiber, ochre, pigment, shell
Early to mid 20th century
22 by 14 by 8 inches (56 by 36 by 20 cm)
Ex Michael Hamson
Lots of character in this large yam mask, sporting a shell earring in one ear and an unusual hidden protruding tongue. Another unusual attribute are his raised-rim eyes. Examples with these attributes are rare. There is a small repair at the top edge of the crest and one missing earring.
