A churinga from the Central Desert of Australia. The geometric patterns
on these sacred objects (also called tjuringa, or tywerrenge)
represent the tracks of totemic ancestors, as they sang up the world in
the “dreamtime”. This one has circular patterns carved on both side, and
on the back are small dots that may have been used for counting or
tracking. It measures 13” high by 2-1/4” wide. Early 20th century.
