Oceanic Art - Feathered dance belt, Teptep, Papua New Guinea

An unusual red-feathered dance belt from the Teptep area in the Finisterre Mountain Range of Madang Province. Strands of cut Jacob's tear seeds end in flourishes of red feathers along the 42" length of this braided fiber belt. A few feathers have been replaced with bright red cotton fabric, as seen in the lower center of the above photo. Papua New Guinea. Early to mid-20th century.  #1749  SOLD
