Dugong net float
Eastern Highlands, Kamano people, Papua New Guinea
Wood
8 inches high by 18 inches long (20.3 by 45.7 cm)
Early 20th century
This unusual headrest is typical of the free-form naturalistic headrests of the Highlands area. Minimally carved with just the suggestion of a pig’s face at either end, it exhibits an charming, awkward grace. Paper label on the underside from Ratton Gallery.
