Dog/frog vessel
Huari/Moche culture, North Coast Peru
Earthenware
8.25" (21 cm) high by 9" (22.8 cm) long by 6.5" (16.5 cm) wide
c. 1200 AD

A shape-shifting crouching dog/frog in reddish brown and cream painted earthenware with a flared mouth rising from the center of the back. Unusual is the rear view, which is rather San Pedro cactus-like and possibly alludes to shamanic associations. Reminiscent of Moche pieces. Intact. Ex. private collection, Iowa, ex. David Stuart, Los Angeles, 1991.
