Late 19th - early 20th century

A traditional Omani necklace with an amulet box, hirz, which opens on the right, where there is an extra chain to attach the open side to the body of the box. The central medallion is applied gold, as are plaques on the four corners.It easily opens to reveal a compartment approximately 1.5 by 2.75 inches, often containing a passage from the Koran. Small protective khamsas and bells hang from silver chains on the lower edge and sides.
