Asian Tribal Art - Bodhidharma toothpick holder, Japan

This fierce ceramic toothpick holder depicting the face of Bodhidharma is from Japan. Legend has it that after falling asleep one time too many while meditating, he ripped his eyelids off and never fell asleep again. This explains the bulging eyeballs and perhaps the grimace as well. This small bowl measures 4" high by 3.75" wide and shows obvious signs of much use. Early to mid 20th century.  #8073  $275  SALE  $225
